How is it roasted?
Roasting is the most energy-hungry step in the whole chain. Ask whether it’s gas or electric, and whether that electricity is renewable. It’s a genuine, easy win for your own carbon reporting.
Can they trace it back to the source?
“Ethically sourced” means very little on its own. A good partner can tell you the farm or co-op, the country, and that producers were paid a fair price, not just point at a certificate.
How fresh is it, and how far has it travelled?
Coffee is at its best within a few weeks of roasting. A local roaster means fresher cups and far fewer delivery miles than a national account shipping from the other end of the country.
What happens to the packaging?
Bags and pods are a quiet source of office waste. Look for fully recyclable packaging and no unnecessary plastic, so your coffee habit isn’t filling the bin.
Will they fit around you?
