Hi, we're kWh, York's electric coffee roaster.

We roast specialty coffee on electricity, time our batches to the grid's cleanest half-hours and deliver it by electric van. And if you buy coffee for a business, we'll show you where your money goes, from the farm to the cup, and what your coffee emits from the UK port to the cup.

Why kWh

Why we started kWh

We named the company after the kilowatt-hour, because that's really how we think about coffee: what goes in, what it costs and what it emits.

Caitlin and Shaun started kWh in York in 2026. The idea was pretty simple: if buses, cars and homes can run on clean electricity, why not a roastery?

We quickly found the roasting was actually the easy bit. The tricky part was everything around it. Most people buying coffee, and most businesses, have no idea what it costs at each step or what it emits along the way. We thought that was a huge opportunity, so we decided to just show people.

The kWh platform

This is the big one for us. We think businesses should be able to buy coffee the way they buy everything else, with the full picture in front of them.

The kWh platform is what we call roasting as a service. You compare the green coffees we can buy, see where your money goes, and get per-kilo Scope 3 data with every order.

    The price is split into shares: the producer, shipping and import, roasting and delivery, and service and support. The per-kilo carbon figure, from the UK port to your cup, sits right beside it.

    Order and report

    We roast it on electricity in York, deliver it by EV, and you pull the carbon data straight into your reporting.

Who it's for. Anyone who buys coffee for a business and has a carbon target to hit: offices and HQs, contract caterers, universities and colleges, hospitals and councils, and hospitality groups working through a net zero plan. If coffee is a line in your Scope 3 report, we'd love to talk.

Every batch is roasted on our Bellwether electric roaster, on mains power, at the Raylor Centre in York.

Timed to the cleanest grid

We keep an eye on the grid and roast in the half-hours when it’s running cleanest, so you get exactly the same coffee with less carbon. See the grid right now

Delivered by EV

Orders across York and North Yorkshire go out in our electric van.

Traceable to the lot

We know exactly which lot every bag came from, and we can tell you its carbon per kilo from the UK port to your cup.

Where you'll find us

Askham Bar Park & Ride

Our horsebox coffee bar runs with First Bus at Askham Bar, where around 750,000 passengers pass through each year. If you’re heading into York, definitely come and grab a flat white on the way.

Events

We’ve done coffee at York City FC and at Everything Electric, where we ran the whole espresso bar straight off an electric van’s V2L socket. It got lots of interest from EV drivers and businesses alike. Coffee for your event

Laurence, Chair. We're really delighted to have Laurence Beardmore as our Chair. He built York Coffee Emporium from a small roaster into a national business before it was sold to the Upton Group. He's a qualified Q Grader and a former President of York & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce.

Caitlin, Coffee and Operations. Caitlin has years of experience in hospitality. Away from coffee, Caitlin is a former contemporary dancer, trained at Trinity Laban.

Shaun, Coffee and Tech. Away from coffee, Shaun has published internationally on AI safety.

Charlie, Coffee and Brand. Charlie has just come back from a stint in Australia, working in a café-roastery and doing science research.
